About Gel-Ice

Zero-Pak Refrigerant Gel-Ice

What is Gel-Ice?

Enviro BottlesZero-Pak® gel-ice is a cellulose-based refrigerant gel used for in-packaging temperature protection of perishable products.

The product is an improved refrigerant process which provides longer lasting refrigeration protection when frozen and permitted to thaw in heat transfer relative with products to be refrigerated. Zero-Pak® has a high latent heat rating—very close to the desirable latent heat quality of water when changing from frozen to thawed state: -140.5 BTU/lb. at 32°F; -155.8 BTU/lb. at 0°F.

The high latent heat of Zero-Pak® is achieved through a gel chemistry containing a very low percentage of solids used to entrain the water as a vital component of a stable plastic mass of gel. Moreover, the insulating quality of cellulose permits a more controlled, gradual transfer of heat as compared to conventional water ice.

Zero-Pak® gel is a highly effective refrigerant since its chemistry achieves a stable gel with the least amount of solids. Many artificial ice packs sacrifice valuable latent heat by forming refrigerant compounds with significantly different freezing points than pure water ice.
